Main Rear View
The full structure adds real covered function while maintaining the clean look of the rear elevation.
This project in Columbine Valley, CO 80123 upgraded an existing deck with a new roof cover designed to match the house architecture, improve shade, and support a brand-new outdoor kitchen. The result created a much more comfortable outdoor living space with better protection, better cooking convenience, and a cleaner overall setup for enjoying the views.
The deck did not have enough covered space for an outdoor kitchen, and the shaded portion built by the original house builder was not enough to make the area truly comfortable. The homeowners had strong neighborhood and landscape views, but not enough decent shade to enjoy them properly for longer periods.
As a result, the outdoor living area felt less comfortable than it should have. The deck had potential, but it was missing the roof structure and utility support needed to turn it into a more usable space for outdoor cooking and everyday enjoyment.
The solution was built to feel consistent with the original home rather than added on later. A new roof cover and deck construction were designed to match the general house architecture, while underground gas utilities were brought in and connected to the new outdoor kitchen.
The entire setup was electrified for convenience, and the composite no-maintenance deck and roof cover were built to support a more enjoyable outdoor cooking process. The new layout now gives the homeowners shade, functionality, and a much stronger reason to use the deck regularly.
The finished project gave the homeowners what the original deck could not: real shade, a usable outdoor kitchen zone, and a more comfortable place to enjoy the neighborhood views. Instead of an underperforming outdoor area, they now have a covered deck designed for cooking, relaxing, and spending time outside much more comfortably.
From the outside, the new roof cover looks intentional and consistent with the home instead of feeling like a disconnected attachment. The proportions, finishes, and massing help the project read as part of the original architecture.
The full structure adds real covered function while maintaining the clean look of the rear elevation.
The new roof cover follows the home’s overall character instead of looking like an afterthought.
The project improves both the function of the deck and the overall visual quality of the outdoor space.
The biggest functional upgrade in this project was the ability to support a real outdoor kitchen under shade. With protected space, utility access, and a better cooking layout, the deck became much more useful for outdoor living.
The new covered space makes cooking outside more comfortable and much more practical than an exposed deck setup.
Gas and electrical service help support a stronger outdoor kitchen layout built for easier day-to-day use.
The original issue was not only lack of roof cover. It was the fact that the deck could not comfortably support the way the homeowners wanted to use it. By adding a matching roof structure, utility-ready kitchen zone, and low-maintenance composite surfaces, the project improved the full outdoor experience instead of only solving one problem.
Many decks look acceptable on paper but do not work well in real use because they lack shade, utility support, or enough cover to make outdoor cooking and gathering comfortable. That was the weakness here: the views were strong, but the experience of using the space was not.
This project shows how adding the right roof cover and outdoor kitchen support can turn an underperforming deck into a much more complete and enjoyable outdoor living area without breaking the architectural consistency of the house.
