Main Yard View
The completed project clearly defines the backyard as a functional gathering space rather than unused open yard.
This project in Wheat Ridge, CO 80034 transformed a large backyard with no real outdoor amenities into a covered living area designed for relaxing, grilling, and hosting family gatherings. The finished build combined a cedar gable roof cover, composite deck, improved kitchen access, and a dedicated setup for outdoor cooking.
The property had a large backyard, but it was not set up for real outdoor living. There was no covered destination space, no organized area for gatherings, and no practical outdoor setup that made the yard feel like an extension of the house.
The house itself was relatively small for larger family events, which made the backyard even more important. Without a strong covered patio and deck solution, the homeowners had plenty of yard space but very little comfortable outdoor activity space.
The homeowners’ new covered patio and deck were designed around comfort, cleaner access, and real outdoor use. A cedar-finished gable roof cover created strong visual character and weather protection, while the composite deck added a durable low-maintenance surface that works with the roof finish color.
To make the space more practical, a kitchen window opening was converted into a door for easier access to the covered patio. A gas line was also brought to the kitchen area, and a concrete pad was poured on the north side of the patio to support the outdoor smoker and grill setup.
The finished project gave the homeowners what the property was missing: a true outdoor destination. Instead of a large empty yard with no real amenities, they now have a covered place for relaxing, eating, gathering, grilling, and spending longer stretches of time outside in comfort.
From the yard, the finished structure reads as a substantial outdoor living feature instead of a basic add-on. The gable form, cedar finish, and full deck footprint give the property a much stronger outdoor identity.

The angled view shows the full roof depth, the deck footprint, and how the build integrates with the house.
The cedar-finished gable gives the project stronger architectural presence than a flat basic cover would provide.
The biggest improvement is not just the structure itself. It is the fact that the homeowners now have a shaded, comfortable place for daily outdoor use, conversations, meals, and longer family gatherings.
The finished covered patio creates a true outdoor room feel, giving the backyard a place where people actually want to spend time.
The composite deck provides a cleaner low-maintenance surface that supports everyday outdoor use much better than an unfinished or temporary patio setup.
This project was not only about adding shade. It was also about making the outdoor area work practically with the house. Kitchen access was improved, the outdoor cooking zone was planned intentionally, and the deck now supports a more convenient setup for grilling and smoking.
The strength of this case is simple: the property already had space, but it did not have function. The new covered patio and deck gave that space a clear purpose and made it useful for real life instead of leaving it as a large empty backyard with wasted potential.
For a relatively small house, this kind of outdoor extension matters even more. It gives the homeowners room to gather, host, relax, and cook outside in a way the original property layout could not support.
If your backyard has space but no real comfort, no shade, or no strong setup for gatherings and grilling, we can help you plan a covered deck solution built around how you actually want to use the property.
